Plot summary
Shamsul Haque grows up in a small Bangladeshi village, where everyone calls him Rajkumar, a dreamy young man with a single ambition: to reach America. His mother, Khadija Begum, went there when he was a child. His father, Abdul Goni Miah, keeps the truth about her from him and threatens to disown him if he leaves. Rajkumar fails the visa interview at the American embassy seventeen times, and the village mocks him. A broker proposes the only remaining path, a wedding to an American citizen, which brings him to Julie. The arrangement carries him to New York, where he struggles with a new language, immigration rules, a different culture and loneliness. He walks the streets of New York with her old photograph, asking in Bangladeshi neighborhoods for any word of her.
