Plot summary
Shirja Mia is a grave digger, and he begs in one village after another so that he will hear when someone has died. He keeps a doll he bought for his daughter and a number passed down from his ancestors, who believed that a digger of one hundred graves would be placed in heaven. Years ago he came to a Char and married. He went to town for work, and Rahela, his daughter, asked him for a doll from the town. Bad weather kept him from returning to the Char. When he came back, a tidal bore had washed out the Char, he could not find his wife or daughter, and the ground was covered with dead bodies. He began digging graves. He has dug ninety-nine. With one grave left, a girl like his daughter brings him a crisis.
