Plot summary
Shyam arrives in India in 1997, crossing the border from Bangladesh, and finds work in the coalfields of the Damodar Valley. There he meets Mohan, a Vaishnavite, and the two build a close friendship. Shyam's strength and Mohan's planning bring them control of the colliery and influence over the coal syndicate, which sets them against the local MLA, Shehzad Siddique. Shyam sides with the poor laborers, most of them from the local adivasi community, and he opposes the seizing of their farmland, giving them a share of the coal khadaan. That brings him into contact with the adivasi leader Mandi.
