Plot summary
In the princely state of Hyderabad in the early 1950s, the village of Nelakondapalli answers to an aristocratic family headed by a woman the villagers call the Dorasani. Young Mallamma has a gift for singing, and the villagers seek solace in her songs. She is attached to a basil tree the village holds sacred, the hidden grave of the rebel leader Rajanna. Sambayya, the old man who raises her, wants her educated and wants her kept from singing, without saying why. At the Dorasani's house he asks for her schooling, and there the music teacher Kulkarni instructs the Dorasani's daughter. Mallamma's voice enrages the Dorasani, who has her flogged and forbids her to sing.
