Plot summary
A book cover decorated with gold and gems, and bearing drawings and inscriptions that form a cipher, is pulled from the rubble of the Moscow metro. The message proves that the library of Ivan the Terrible, the Liberea, is real, and the way to it is mapped on the cover. The find then lies forgotten for decades. In the present day the cover comes to Ilya Arshinov, who has no idea what he owns, and powerful forces begin hunting him. He joins his estranged father Arkady, who knows how to handle the old cover, and Arina, a philologist able to decipher its ciphers. The three travel across Russia, from Vologda and Naryan-Mar to passages beneath the Kremlin, to read the clues.
