Plot summary
Judit Polgár is one of three Hungarian sisters whose father trains all three of them toward a single ambition: making each daughter a chess grandmaster. The training begins in childhood, and Judit ends up competing in the international men's game, where the leading players are male. At the top of that world sits Garry Kasparov, the world champion, and he and Judit meet in a series of matches that stretch across fifteen years. Behind the games are the family's methods, the upbringing of the three sisters in Hungary, and the patriarchal culture of a sport that Judit Polgár pushed against.
