Plot summary
In 1986, Elizabeth Wurtzel, known as Lizzie, starts at Harvard at nineteen with a scholarship in journalism and hopes to become a rock music critic. Her parents divorced when she was two, and she has not seen her father in four years. Flashbacks show how thoroughly her parents stopped talking to each other, a breakdown echoed in her strained exchanges with her mother, Lynne. Shortly after she arrives, she decides to lose her virginity to Noah, an older student, and throws a party about it with Ruby, her roommate. An article she writes for the campus music column wins her an award from Rolling Stone early in the semester.
