Plot summary
Work at a research laboratory at a Florida university aims to bring dead brain tissue in baboons back to life. Instead the experiments produce a rage virus. A young reporter for the college paper sneaks into the campus laboratory and is bitten by one of the infected animals; the bite leaves him in an uncontrollable fury. The virus moves out of the building with him and across the campus, where students are gathered for a Halloween party. Three rapists and a valley girl are caught up in it as well, and the infection keeps passing from one person to the next.

- Umberto Lenzi was hired to write Primal Rage after being shown two scripts, but when he arrived in the United States his backers insisted he film the other one, which became Nightmare Beach; his own script, a homage to Cat People, was rewritten by James Justice.
- The final script of Primal Rage was credited to "Harry Kirkpatrick", an alias also used by James Justice on Nightmare Beach, which he worked on as well.
