Plot summary
In 1944, with the Allies preparing to invade German-occupied Europe, the Normandy landings of Operation Overlord are set for June 5. Eisenhower, the supreme commander, is wary, remembering Exercise Tiger, a rehearsal six weeks before in which soldiers were killed. On June 2 he summons Group Captain James Stagg, a Scottish meteorologist, to Southwick House and asks for a forecast favorable to the operation, which begins in 61 hours. Made SHAEF's chief meteorological officer, Stagg leads a British-American team that predicts two low-pressure storms bound for the English Channel, with heavy rain and high waves. Colonel Irving P. Krick, who heads the American section and favors forecasts built on historical patterns, disputes the reading. Stagg calls the June 5 date disastrous and asks for a postponement, while General Bernard Montgomery warns that delay risks discovery by the Germans.

- The film leaves out the Norwegian meteorologist Sverre Petterssen, who in reality was the man decisive in postponing D-Day; it was his forecast that spotted the gap between the two storm centers and the chance to land on June 6.
- The film has James Stagg joining the staff only days before the invasion, but the real Stagg had already been running practice forecasts with U.S. Army Air Forces analysts since November 1943.
- The real Stagg never recommended June 18 for the invasion, and the weather had already begun deteriorating by June 3, even though the film shows clear, sunny conditions until a sudden storm on June 4.
