Plot summary
Pope Francis speaks straight into the camera, as though addressing the viewer alone, and answers questions that come to him from different parts of the world. He takes up ecology, immigration, consumerism and social justice, and sets out the reforms he seeks. The interviewer stays out of the frame. Woven between the conversations are documentary shots of his visits to prisons and hospitals, of his speeches, and of his travels, in which he carries a message of hope. Scenes shot in and around Assisi bring in Francesco d'Assisi, and footage from television stations and the Vatican archives fills out the rest.

- Wim Wenders said the project originated when the Vatican sent him a letter in 2014 asking him to lead a project about Pope Francis.
- Wenders himself shot the interview sessions with Pope Francis and the re-enactments around the city of Assisi, but much of the rest of the film was stock footage from TV stations and the Vatican archives, and he held final cut privilege.
