Plot summary
Maggie Butler, a film student and screenwriter, tapes her dreams of a girl caught in flames and hunted by someone, hoping to turn them into a film. Her classmate Toby D'Amato proposes an all-night horror marathon at the abandoned Dreamland theater to raise money for the film department, and brings in Dr. Mnesyne to supply memorabilia and props from his shop. Among the inventory is Possessor, a short cult film that resembles Maggie's dreams; its maker, Lanyard Gates, set the theater on fire after killing his family during the shooting of the final scene. Maggie's mother Suzanne waves off the film and urges her to quit the festival. On the opening night, a stranger buys a ticket from Maggie and greets her as Sarah.

- Director Alan Ormsby was replaced by Porky's actor Mark Herrier a few weeks into filming Popcorn; the cast and crew believed he was fired for being too detail-oriented about the fake horror movies shown in the film. The original lead actress, Amy O'Neill, was replaced by Jill Schoelen at the same time.
- Bob Clark, adamant about not directing another horror film after Black Christmas, turned down the offer to direct and suggested his Deathdream collaborator Alan Ormsby. Clark stayed on as an uncredited producer and served as second unit director when needed.
