Plot summary
Grant Willard stages Figure 8 stock car races, a format whose crossing pattern guarantees crashes and injuries. He wants amateur drag racer Rick Bowman in his competitions. Bowman is a hustler who races on the street. Willard bails him out of jail and offers to sponsor him as a stock car driver. Bowman accepts and enters the Figure 8 circuit. Among the drivers there is Hawk Sidney, a popular star who boasts and taunts, and Ed McCleod, the champion.

- The soundtrack is credited to Seattle psychedelic band The Daily Flash, but the group had already broken up before the film was made; the music should be credited to a later project, Two Guitars, Piano, Drum & Darryl.
- Jack Hill came up with the film after watching figure 8 racing, which he found so "crazy and so loony" that he wanted to document it.
- Pit Stop gave Hollywood veteran Brian Donlevy, the star of the film, his final acting role; he died in 1972.
