Plot summary
Piku Banerjee, a thirty-year-old Bengali architect, lives in Delhi with her widowed father, Bhashkor, who is seventy and treats every ailment as a matter of his bowels. He has dismissed five maids in two months and quarrels with Piku, the servants and her aunt Chhobi Mashi. Piku runs an architecture practice and travels everywhere in taxis owned by Rana Chaudhary, whose drivers dread her backseat driving. When a relative, Nabendu, arrives from Kolkata seeking consent to sell the family's ancestral house, Bhashkor refuses and says he will go there himself. He will not fly because of his breathing and will not take a train because the motion troubles him, so he chooses the road, and Rana, finding no driver willing to take the fare, drives them himself.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Before Deepika Padukone was cast in the title role, Shoojit Sircar's first choice for Piku was Parineeti Chopra; she was given the script along with Amitabh Bachchan and Irrfan Khan but turned the part down, and the final trio was confirmed in mid-2014.
- Piku was not written with an interval in mind. Director Shoojit Sircar added one during the editing stage because Indian theatre operators tend to force intervals into films during screenings.
- Amitabh Bachchan won his record-setting fourth National Film Award for Best Actor and his record-setting third Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics) for the film, which also took 5 Filmfare Awards from 8 nominations, including Best Actress for Deepika Padukone.
