Plot summary
Born in 1827, Jyotirao Phule is the son of a gardener from the Mali caste in 19th-century India. He sees widows pushed into despair and people called untouchable denied dignity, and he is turned away from a friend's wedding because of his birth. He marries Savitribai and teaches her to read and write, though society scorns the idea. In 1848 the two open a school for girls in Pune, the first of its kind in India, where girls, Shudras and Dalits learn reading, writing and self-worth. Upper-caste mobs throw stones at the school and threaten the couple, and those who hold power in the country stand against them.
