Plot summary
In the village of Peepli, in Mukhya Pradesh, the farmer Natha struggles to earn enough for his wife Dhaniya, his children and his ailing mother Amma, while banks demand repayment of his loans and hold his land as security. His elder brother Budhia joins him in asking the village headman, Bhai Thakur, for help. Thakur, whose Sammaan party faces a by-election against the Apna Dal opposition, tells them that a suicide would bring the family government compensation of one lakh rupees. Budhia takes the idea seriously. Discussing it at a tea stall, the brothers are overheard by Rakesh, a local reporter, and his report carries the story to the national news channels.
