Plot summary
James Rethrick, who runs the technology company Allcom, offers his former college roommate Michael Jennings a three-year contract on the company campus, paid in company stock. Jennings makes his living reverse engineering other companies' technology, a job that ends with his memory of the work erased, and he hesitates before accepting. Before he starts he turns in his personal effects, then meets the biologist Rachel Porter and the physicist William Dekker. Three years later his memory is wiped again, and he finds his Allcom stock, worth more than $92 million, signed away weeks earlier. The envelope that supposedly holds his possessions contains items he does not recognize, and FBI agents detain him.
