Plot summary
Gian Singh is a Sikh soldier who leaves the British Indian Army and goes back to the town where he grew up, close to the border with Pakistan, as the subcontinent is split in two. Naseem Khan, a seventeen-year-old Muslim, is cut off from her family in the riots and hides in the woods, hoping the mobs will not find her. Gian comes across her there and takes her in. The pair are discovered, and they have to buy her safety with money. The neighbors dislike having her among them at first, then slowly come to accept her, while both carry memories of the violence they have lived through.
