Plot summary
Jesse Arista lives with his father, sister and grandmother in Oxnard, California, where he has just finished high school. He and his friend Hector use a new camera to record the wailing that comes from the apartment of their downstairs neighbor, Ana Sanchez. Through a ventilation shaft they film Ana drawing a symbol on a woman's stomach, and Marisol thinks Ana is a bruja, a Mexican witch. Oscar, a former classmate, is seen fleeing Ana's apartment, and Ana is later found dead. Jesse and Hector enter the apartment and turn up ritual objects, occult signs and a journal. They keep the journal but stay away from the police, fearing Oscar's brother Arturo, a gang member.
