Plot summary
In 1946 Hell's Kitchen, three Carboni brothers live in the slums of New York. Cosmo, the eldest, hustles and panhandles; Lenny, back from the war with a limp, works as an undertaker; and Victor, the youngest, hauls ice up stairways. Susan Chow, Victor's Chinese-American girlfriend, and Lenny are the voices he listens to. When Victor holds his own against the neighborhood's strongest man, Frankie the Thumper, at arm wrestling, Cosmo sees the fights at the Paradise Alley club as a route out of Hell's Kitchen and proposes that the brothers train and manage Victor. Lenny agrees only to keep Victor safe, and Victor, renamed Kid Salami, wants to marry Susan and buy a houseboat in New Jersey.
