Plot summary
The last reservist assembly for men their age brings together six forty-year-olds from different corners of Soviet life. Herman Ivanovich Kostin is an astrophysicist, Spirkin an architect, Sultan a butcher, and Vasily Sergeyevich Afonin drives a trolleybus and has been elected a people's deputy. Some of them know one another from earlier assemblies and count themselves friends, though work, daily routine and differing interests keep them apart. The exercise ends ahead of time, and at the station they miss the train home. A strange pause opens: no one knows their whereabouts, no one is expecting them, and nothing requires them to hurry. The rare astronomical phenomenon known as the parade of the planets is said to affect several of them strangely.
