Plot summary
Lachchi, a young village girl in Rajasthan, is married to Kishanlal, the dutiful son of a wealthy merchant, Bhanwarlal. On their wedding night he tells her he must set off the next morning for Jamnagar, where his father's business will keep him for five years. Devastated, Lachchi stays with her in-laws. On the journey a ghost resting at a dharamshala had seen her, and it speaks with Kishanlal at a watering hole, learning of the long absence. Taking Kishanlal's shape and voice, the ghost arrives at Bhanwarlal's house with a tale of a sage who promised five gold coins every morning, and Bhanwarlal welcomes him back. At night the ghost tells Lachchi who he really is, and she accepts him as her husband.

- Kajol was the first choice to play Lachchi but turned the role down; it was then offered to Aishwarya Rai, Tabu and Sushmita Sen, all of whom declined, before Rani Mukherjee was signed on.
- In 2004 director Palekar went to Shah Rukh Khan for a hearing, and after hearing the script Khan asked whether he could produce the film as well as star in it.
- The film was shot entirely in Rajasthan, but a desert scene featuring Bachchan and Khan was instead filmed in Mumbai on a helipad.
