Plot summary
Drought has held a kingdom for years. Arvasu, a Brahmin who earns his living as an actor, loves Nittilai, a tribal girl; she wants her father and the village elders to agree to the match first. Arvasu's brother Parvasu conducts the long fire sacrifice meant to appease Devraj Indra and end the drought. Raibhya, the father of Arvasu and Parvasu, dislikes both his sons and detests Vishaka, Parvasu's wife. Years ago Vishaka and Yavakri were in love; he then spent a decade in the jungle worshipping Devraj Indra for divine knowledge, and came back to find her married to Parvasu. He now seeks her out beside the well on her daily walks, and she refuses him because she is married.
