Plot summary
Lakshmikant Chauhan and Gayatri marry, and he wants her to want for nothing. When her periods come, the household sets her apart, and he finds her using an unhygienic rag. The sanitary pads he buys at a medical store cost fifty-five rupees, and Gayatri tells him to take them back, since the money equals a month of milk. At work, when a worker is injured, he presses a pad to the wound and a doctor praises the choice. He then makes a pad from cotton, cloth, and glue, but it fails, and Gayatri asks him to leave women's matters alone. He keeps trying, giving pads to a neighbor girl and to a medical student, and the village turns against him.

- Pad Man was not screened in Kuwait and was banned in Pakistan over its taboo subject; Pakistan's Central Board of Film Censors refused it a No-Objection Certificate, saying the film's name, subject and story were not acceptable in the country's society.
- Arunachalam Muruganantham, the sanitary-pad inventor whose life inspired the film, worked closely on set in India with R. Balki, Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna, making sure every detail was accurate, from how he built his machine to how it was operated, even his own posture.
- Akshay Kumar was not the first choice for the lead role of Laxmikant Chauhan, but R. Balki and Twinkle Khanna wanted him, believing it would be a game-changing event if Kumar, whom the Indian public idolises and men look up to, wore a sanitary pad.
- After filming in India, the team shot pivotal New York scenes at the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Jazz at Lincoln Center and the United Nations headquarters. It became the second Bollywood film shot at the UN after Half Girlfriend; the Hollywood film The Interpreter was the first film ever shot there.
