Plot summary
After an accident he has seen, a man is brought to a hospital. He has no memory of it, barely talks, and cannot say who he is. He calls himself P.J., and his hands are burned. The resident psychiatrist, Alan Shearson, tries to get through to him and to discover what happened, while dealing with troubles in his own life. Shearson's boss would rather hand the patient over to the state mental ward. The man's ex-girlfriend, still bitter, is unwilling to help. The patient shifts among several personalities, and the doctor keeps working to learn his identity and the story behind his burns.
