Plot summary
Perica Šafranek is six years old, and the events in Zagreb in the 1930s are seen through his eyes. His mother Ana has grown unhappy in her marriage to his father Franjo, who is older than she is. On a family picnic, a Zagreb dandy named Mr Fulir begins flirting with Ana, and Franjo notices nothing. During the family's trip to Samobor Fulir wins Ana's heart, and after their return to Zagreb he visits the house. Mina, Ana's unmarried sister, also takes a liking to him. Franjo considers Mr Fulir a good man and Mina rich, and he wants to see the two of them married.
