Plot summary
Shula is returning from a party when she comes upon the body of her uncle Fred lying in the road. Her father asks her to stay with it until the police arrive in the morning, and her cousin Nsansa, drunk, also reaches the scene. The next day relatives descend on Shula's home, emptying it of possessions because the family will gather there for the funeral. Her aunties scold her for doing laundry on a funeral day and press her to fetch her mother from the airport. Fred's widow is blamed for his death. Shula and Nsansa set off to visit their cousin Bupe at her college dorm.
