Plot summary
In January 2015, a few weeks after finishing his memoir, the neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks learns that a rare cancer treated nine years earlier has returned and he has months to live. He sits for eighty hours of filmed interviews in his New York apartment, five days in February and three more sessions in April and June. Surrounded by books, minerals and six decades of notebooks about the brain, he speaks about his work, his dreams and fears, and his wonder at the natural world. He also addresses his struggles with substance abuse and internalized homophobia, and the medical establishment's long rejection of his work. Family members, colleagues, patients and friends add their own recollections, along with material from the archives of the Oliver Sacks Foundation.
