Plot summary
John is a professor at a college, in line for tenure and arranging a move into a new home with his wife. Carol is a student in one of his classes who has failed a paper, and she comes to his office to challenge the grade. The two disagree about the course material, especially a book that John himself wrote and that the class is reading. Their conversation grows into an argument. At one point John puts a hand on Carol's shoulder to comfort her, and she pulls back from the gesture. He tells her he is fond of her and offers her a top grade if she will come back to discuss the material.
