Plot summary
Senga Wilson is driving her fifteen-year-old daughter Nat home overnight after a birthday visit to Nat's father, Marek. They pass a freeway crash, where a man and a woman photograph the wreckage, and the man aims his camera at Senga. Tired, she stops at a truck stop diner, where Nat offers a young female backpacker a ride. The ambient CD the stranger plays unsettles Senga. Back at the diner, tickets Marek bought Nat for a concert Senga forbids spark an argument, and Nat leaves with the backpacker.

- Director Marcus Adams spent a year rewriting the film with screenwriter Stephen Volk, altering the ending and turning what had been "essentially a vampire movie" into a "faint" vampire film in which vampires were a metaphor rather than literal beings.
- Octane, though set in the United States, was shot in Luxembourg, chosen because of a 12 km stretch of highway that had recently been paved and had yet to open; contractors painted yellow and white lines so it would look like an American highway.
- Orbital had contributed tracks to other feature films, but Octane was the first film for which they composed the full soundtrack, consisting mainly of techno, ambient and ambient industrial music.
