Plot summary
In 1850, Lucy Westenra bears a daughter in a derelict palace in the woods. Fearing the devil will claim the child, she begs a hunchbacked Romani to carry the infant Alucarda to a stone-walled convent of Catholic nuns, and dies as he flees with her. Fifteen years later, Alucarda lives with the order and takes to Justine, a new orphan her own age, whom she calls her sister. In the forest the girls watch a Romani funeral procession, and the hunchback offers Alucarda an amulet. They wander into the derelict palace and its crypt, where Alucarda declares her love for Justine and the two swear they will die together; they open the grave of Alucarda's mother and a force overcomes them.
