Plot summary
For decades, John M. Hull has watched his vision deteriorate. In 1983 he becomes totally blind, only days before his first son is born. To make sense of the change, Hull starts speaking into audio cassettes, setting down what he notices and what he misses. He recalls the faces of family members he can no longer see and looks for academic books in audio form. When none are available, friends and relatives read the texts onto tape for him. His recordings and his autobiography, Touching the Rock: An Experience of Blindness, shape a documentary portrait of his interior life. The film draws on his voice and on dramatized passages of his daily experience.
