Plot summary
Kabir is a young retired Indian Army officer who takes a teaching post at his late father's school, the Wular Public School, in a rural part of the Kashmir Valley. The school will be closed if no teacher teaches there, and the only way to reach it is by boat. In a desk drawer Kabir finds a diary left behind by Firdaus Quadri, the teacher before him. Word that a new teacher has arrived brings the children back to class, but they disobey him, and he thinks he cannot teach.
