Plot summary
Toru Watanabe is a quiet, serious university student in 1960s Tokyo. His best friend Kizuki kills himself without explanation, and Toru leaves for a university in the city. He meets Naoko, Kizuki's former girlfriend, on a walk in a park. Naoko is still devastated by Kizuki's death and falls into a deep depression. On her twentieth birthday she and Toru spend the night together. Toru remains devoted to her, but she is unable to answer his feelings. During the spring semester he meets Midori, a fellow student who is outgoing and sure of herself, and he is drawn to both women.
