Plot summary
In Okayama, Hisashi meets Mai at a restaurant party, and she tells him she dislikes his sullen manner. He apologizes, explaining that he had felt sick all day, and the two begin dating. Months later Hisashi, who is shy, asks her to marry him, and she accepts. They reserve a hall for the ceremony. Her memory then begins to fail, and one day she suffers an extreme seizure. At the hospital her heart stops; the doctors save her, but she stays in a coma, diagnosed with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. Hisashi visits daily and joins her parents, Hatsumi and Kōji, in caring for her. They begin to worry about him, and one day they tell him not to come anymore and to get on with his life. He refuses to give up, holding to the promise he made her.
