Plot summary
Michael is a high school graduate in North Hollywood, California, who dreams of becoming a professional skateboarder. After two professional skaters take an interest in him, he quits his water polo team so that he can skate full time. He believes his friends Jay and Adolf treat skating less seriously than he does, and he does not want to waste his time with them, so he skates with the professional skaters more often. Tension grows in his friendships and in his relationship with his father, who thinks skating is not a realistic career and presses him toward college and a steady job.
