Plot summary
Dr. Richard Talbot works in San Francisco, shares his practice with Dr. Joel Merriam, and goes home to his wife, Lucy, and their children, Gregory and Bonita. He finds the routine of his married life dull. One day he sees nightclub singer Nora Prentiss struck by a truck near his office, and the two gradually begin an affair that unsettles his household and his practice. After he forgets his daughter's birthday, he tries to slow things with Nora, but she wants to end the affair altogether. The break leaves him so shaken that he nearly kills a patient during surgery, and he is not willing to lose her. He does not know how to ask Lucy for a divorce.
