Plot summary
GNE security inspector Jack Jackman, once a policeman, travels to the Jevel Afra site in the Central Sahara while a sandstorm cuts it off. The twenty-five members of Professor Borman's research team have not been heard from in days. At the station he finds signs of a struggle, cryptic Arabic messages painted on the walls in blood, and a jackal that was ritually sacrificed. He photographs the writing so it can be translated, and with the storm preventing a proper search he turns to the team's video recordings. Those show that Borman opened the dig to investigate an air pocket detected nine miles below the surface. While resting in his vehicle he suffers a vivid hallucination.
