Plot summary
He Fei and his wife Li Muzi are marking their first wedding anniversary at an island resort in Barlandia, a fictional Southeast Asian nation. Muzi disappears, and the local police refuse to open a case, citing no proof that a crime took place. When He Fei presses them, they throw him out of the station; one officer, Zheng, speaks Chinese and shows him sympathy. The following morning a woman he has never seen is in his room, calling herself Muzi and holding a passport in that name. Photos of Muzi stored on his phone have been swapped for images of this newcomer, who also knows intimate details that belonged only to his wife. At a bar he watches a news item about the lawyer Chen Mai and hires her to prove the woman is not his wife.
