Plot summary
Josh Cameron and his brother Mike set out on a vacation in the South when Al and some of his friends force them off the road. The two reach a small town where people have been falling ill and some have vanished. Sheriff Will Stewart finds them a place to stay for the night, a bed and breakfast. In the night, something beneath Mike's bed seizes him and pulls him under, and in the morning Mike is gone. Josh stays in town and begins going through it to look for his brother, and a schoolteacher named Holly Pierce offers to help him search.

- Mark Rosman was hired to direct but fell behind schedule because his precise, methodical shooting left no flexibility in editing; producer Edward L. Montoro had John "Bud" Cardos shadow him, then replace him with only a day of prep time.
- John "Bud" Cardos, the director brought in to replace Rosman on Mutant, had previously stepped in for Tobe Hooper on the troubled Film Ventures International horror production The Dark.
