Plot summary
A storm chaser with the Kansas State Tornado Center, Bob Iverson, follows a supercell across rural Nebraska and warns a farm family as a tornado touches down near their land. Farther southwest, in the town of Blainsworth, teenager Danny Hatch damages his bike in a fall festival race and finishes it at his stepfather Jack's insistence; he wins a new bicycle in a bank raffle. Danny's best friend Arthur Darlington and Arthur's sisters, Stacey and Ronnie Vae, are at home without their parents. Danny's mother Laura leaves for her waitressing shift and asks him to watch his infant half-brother Ryan, while Jack drives off to check on his mother Belle. Then the sirens sound over Blainsworth.

- Night of the Twisters draws on a real disaster: seven tornadoes that struck Grand Island, Nebraska on June 3, 1980, killing five people and injuring 134 others. It was adapted loosely from Ivy Ruckman's 1984 young-adult novel, with the film's town of Blainsworth standing in for Grand Island.
- Night of the Twisters was the first original movie made for The Family Channel, the cable network now known as Freeform. It premiered there on February 11, 1996, and stayed on the channel and its successors until 2004.
