Plot summary
Newton Kumar is a rookie government clerk on reserve when he is posted to the jungles of Chhattisgarh for election duty, after the officer assigned to a town there is found to have a heart condition. The Central Reserve Police Force guarding the area, led by Assistant Commandant Aatma Singh, long ago gave up on the local vote and sees no reason to risk lives for it. Communist insurgents are active in these mineral-rich forests, and politicians who campaign there have been shot. Newton insists on following the rule book, and Aatma Singh must take him to a polling booth deep in the jungle, where the clerk sets up his station and waits for voters. Aatma Singh frequently disrespects the block local officer, Malko Netam, an Adivasi.
