Plot summary
Diaries and letters written at the time, along with archive footage and interviews with people who survived the massacre and with Japanese soldiers who took part, carry the account of Nanjing in December 1937. Attention goes to the Western expatriates who stayed: John Rabe, the German businessman who set up the Nanking Safety Zone and held Nazi Party membership; Robert O. Wilson, the surgeon who remained to care for the wounded; and Minnie Vautrin, an educator who aided thousands of the city's women. With other missionaries, professors and businessmen they brought 250,000 Chinese civilians into the zone. Actors read the letters and diaries aloud. Iris Chang's book The Rape of Nanking inspired the project.

- The film exists because AOL vice-chairman Ted Leonsis saw the obituary of author Iris Chang, then read her book The Rape of Nanking while on holiday in St Bart's at Christmas 2005; he researched the massacre further and funded the project himself.
- Japanese nationalist filmmaker Satoru Mizushima attacked the documentary as a Chinese intelligence operation and announced a rival film, The Truth about Nanjing, treating the massacre as propaganda; producer Ted Leonsis answered on his blog that his film was anti-war, not anti-Japanese.
