Plot summary
Nicole, fourteen, lives in New York City and travels to the Bahamas on holiday with her father, André Arnel, a Frenchman divorced from her American mother. She has given him a hard time over the attention he missed in earlier years. At the resort she is drawn to Ben, seventeen, who works at the hotel, and André judges the boy too old for her. Annoyed at being treated as a child, Nicole invents a story to make herself more interesting: that André is not her father but her lover, the man who once rescued her from a life of debauchery. She also tells Ben she is sixteen. André has no idea what she is telling people.
