Plot summary

Salma is the only child of a comfortable family in Jeddah. Her father, Ahmad, is often away on business, and her mother, Sarah, is anxious, so it falls to the household's new driver, a Sudanese man named Gamar, to take the nervous seven-year-old to her first day at school. That day ends badly, and he cheers her up at the Corniche with a yo-yo and ice cream. Gamar has left a wife and baby daughter in Sudan and sends his earnings home. Ten years on, Salma is seventeen. At the ice cream counter on her birthday, a boy named Waleed asks for her number, and Gamar, whose friendship with her has lasted a decade, disapproves. Hanan is her closest friend at school. Gamar tells his friend Salem that he intends to return to Sudan once the school year ends.
