Plot summary
Germain Chazes is 45 and illiterate, earning what he can as a handyman. His trailer stands beside his mother's house, and the vegetables he grows there go to market on a truck lent to him by the bar where he drinks with friends. Annette, who drives the village bus, is his girlfriend. He knows all 19 pigeons at the bench by name. Margueritte is 95 and lives in the village retirement home; she reads often and was once a scientist at the World Health Organization. She joins him on the bench and reads Albert Camus aloud, and he listens well and has a vivid imagination, so the two arrange to meet there each day to go on reading.
