Nicholas Parsons
Biography
Nicholas Parsons was an English actor, straight man and broadcaster who became a full-time performer after the Second World War. Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, and schooled in London, he made his West End stage debut in The Hasty Heart in 1945, toured with Arsenic and Old Lace, and entered films with Master of Bankdam in 1947. He built a career in repertory and as a Windmill Theatre comedian, then spent a decade as Arthur Haynes's straight man, appearing with him at the London Palladium. From 1968 to 1971 he was a regular on The Benny Hill Show. He hosted the radio panel game Just a Minute from 1967 and Sale of the Century from 1971 to 1983, and later guest-starred in Doctor Who. He also took stage roles in Into the Woods and The Rocky Horror Show, wrote an autobiography, and was appointed OBE and later CBE.
