Plot summary
Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, holds the remains of an old city, and a troop of toque macaques makes its home there under a strict social order. Maya belongs to the lowest rank, and Raja, the alpha male, watches her closely as though she were his possession. When courtship season arrives, a male named Kumar appears at the edge of the troop's territory, and the two mate without the others knowing. Raja catches them and chases Kumar off. Six months on, Maya has a son, Kip, and with Kumar gone she raises him alone. The troop's high-ranking females, the Sisterhood, claim the best food first, so Maya leads the other lowborn monkeys to a lily pond where lotus seed pods can be found.
