Plot summary
One taste now prevails in wine: deep in color and aged in oak, the model that Bordeaux made familiar. Robert Parker's writing, the magazine Wine Spectator and the consulting of Michel Rolland of Pomerol have carried it outward, and large multinational producers, among them the Napa corporation Mondavi, which is publicly traded and has made wine as a family business, push it further. Winemakers in many countries, some of them clients of Rolland, work in the same way. A few old winemakers in Aniane, Sardinia and Argentina make the opposite case: that a wine should show the character of the land where its grapes were grown, as the lighter wines of Burgundy do.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux promoted Mondovino into the festival's competition from a non-competitive category just hours before the deadline; it screened in May 2004 running 2 hours 49 minutes and was cut to 2 hours 15 minutes afterwards.
- Mondovino was one of only four documentaries ever nominated for the Palme d'Or in the history of the Cannes Film Festival.
- Jonathan Nossiter shot the film himself on a hand-held Sony PD-150 camcorder over four years, helped by Uruguayan filmmaker Juan Pittaluga and photographer Stephanie Pommez, on a budget of around $400,000; over 500 hours were shot in seven countries and five languages.
- The film let Jonathan Nossiter use what he knew as a trained sommelier from his time working at Balthazar in New York, and gave him the chance to visit some of the great wine regions of the world.
