Plot summary
Trisha Rawlings is a wealthy Beverly Hills socialite whose husband, Stu, has been unfaithful, and the separation has left her lonely. At a pharmacy she runs into Strip, a young drifter she once met when he parked cars as a valet. He becomes infatuated and turns up at her Malibu beach house, hanging around although she treats him coldly and offering her pills to win her over. She is annoyed at first, then warms to him, though not as strongly as he does. A lunch together marks the start of a relationship that troubles her: she enjoys his company, but the gap in their ages and social standing makes her ashamed.

- While making Moment by Moment, Universal Pictures brought in Saturday Night Fever cinematographer Ralf D. Bode to help direct Jane Wagner, crediting him only as a technical advisor, and producer Robert Stigwood tried to have Wagner fired, meeting resistance from Lily Tomlin and John Travolta.
