Plot summary
Midsummer Night, 1890. A County Fermanagh manor house stands all but empty, with only three people left in it: the cook Kathleen, the valet John, and the landlord's daughter, Miss Julie. Kathleen and John are engaged, and they talk about how Miss Julie made John dance with her; he takes pleasure in Kathleen's jealousy. When Miss Julie comes in, Kathleen goes to tend the young woman's suffering dog, leaving the aristocrat alone with John. In a mischievous mood, Miss Julie traps him, and servant and lady trade impassioned speeches full of innuendo and tension. John says he has loved her since he first saw her as a child, then reminds her how far apart their positions in the class system are. Miss Julie orders him about like a slave, then turns into a damsel in distress.
